Chelsea fans are saying the same thing after Ian Maatsen reaches Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund

Chelsea fans have all made a similar remark after watching Ian Maatsen last night help Borussia Dortmund qualify for the Champions League final.

Borussia Dortmund won 1-0 at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night to earn them a 2-0 aggregate victory in the Champions League semis.

Next, they'll play either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the European final at Wembley Stadium on 1 June.

For Ian Maatsen, he's had the most incredible journey this season. He spent the first half of the campaign struggling for minutes on Chelsea's bench, but he's become a key player since joining German club Dortmund on a short-term loan in January.

The 22-year-old left-back has played every minute of Dortmund's run in the Champions League knockouts, proving he's good enough to perform on the biggest stage.

Chelsea fans make Ian Maatsen claim

A selection of Blues supporters on social media were discussing Chelsea loanee Maatsen after his Champions League heroics this week, completing 90 minutes during Dortmund's victory over PSG in Paris.

Interestingly, they were all commenting that the on-loan Dortmund full-back could definitely replicate the recent success of Marc Cucurella at Stamford Bridge.

We've seen recently Cucurella, 25, flourish in the Chelsea XI in his role as an inverted left-back that drops into central midfield positions. It's been suggested by fans that Maatsen could definitely do the same job.

One fan wrote: "Chelsea should do everything possible to bring Maatsen back to the club if we're gonna continue with this new system of inverting Cucurella. Maatsen is definitely not as aggressive as Cucu but he should be able to do a good job there with his style of play whenever Cucu ain't available."

Another said: "No disrespect to Cucurella, but Ian Maatsen would have been a better fit for the inverted LB role. Sending him out on loan instead was a missed opportunity."

A third claimed: "Lowkey shouldn't have loaned out Maatsen, he would've replaced Cucurella in this inverted role."

Another posted: "Maatsen in that Cucurella role will shine. Please don't sell Maatsen!!!"

A fifth supporter said: "Ian Maatsen has been amazing. Him as a backup or rotation with Cucurella would have been lovely for next season."

Another claimed: "Maatsen as our inverted fullback would be class he's so technically gifted pacy for getting back into position when we don't have the ball. Yet we will sell him for nothing."

Ian Maatsen future

Unfortunately, rumours suggest Chelsea fans are unlikely to see Maatsen back playing for them again.

It's starting to feel like yet again the club may be letting a very talented player slip through their fingers.

Sky Sports Germany claimed this month that Maatsen has already informed Chelsea that he doesn't want to return to Stamford Bridge in the summer when his loan deal with Dortmund ends. Apparently, negotiations are underway for the attack-minded full-back to join the Bundesliga club on a permanent basis.
