Morocco's Coach Regragui Hit with ₦4.5 Million Fine and Suspension in Wake of AFCON Drama

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken decisive action following the incidents that occurred during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) fixture between Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Morocco's coach, Walid Regragui, has been handed a four-match suspension by CAF, a ruling that demonstrates the organization's commitment to maintaining discipline and fair play in the tournament.

According to reports from Adepoju Tobi Samuel on X, "Morocco coach, Walid Regragui suspended for four matches, two of these matches are suspended for a period of one (1) year.

"CAF imposed a fine of $5,000 on Mr Walid Regragui, Moroccan and DR Congo FAs fined $20,000 each, CAF imposed a fine of $10,000 on the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football for the use of smoke bombs by its supporters during the match. $5,000 of this amount is suspended."

Walid Regragui's Suspension

Regragui, who guided Morocco to an impressive semi-final appearance at the 2022 World Cup, faces a significant setback with this decision.

Out of the four-match suspension, two are to be served immediately, while the remaining two are suspended for one year.

This sanction means Regragui will miss crucial upcoming matches in the AFCON tournament, including Morocco's last-16 game against South Africa unless an appeal by the Moroccan football federation is successful. His absence could have a considerable impact on the team's strategy and performance in these key fixtures.

Fines Imposed on Football Federations

In addition to Regragui's suspension, both the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) and the Fédération Congolaise de Football Association (FECOFA) have been fined $20,000 each by CAF.

This decision underscores the seriousness with which CAF is addressing the post-match incidents. Furthermore, the FRMF faces an additional fine of $10,000 for the use of smoke bombs by Moroccan supporters during the match, although half of this amount is suspended.
