AFCON 2023: CAF Clears Nigeria, Sanctions Cote d'Ivoire, Others

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has given Nigeria and its entire Super Eagles team a clean bill of health. They found no evidence of wrongdoing during their performance in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations tournament. Hence, they will face no disciplinary action from the CAF Disciplinary Board.

Nigeria's national football team, the Super Eagles, put on a strong showing at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). They fought their way through seven matches, emerging victorious in five, holding their opponents to a draw in one, and only experiencing a single defeat.

Nigeria's stellar performance in the tournament saw them cruise through the first six matches, undefeated and brimming with confidence. However, their dream run came to a heartbreaking end in the final against the host nation, Cote d'Ivoire, where they fell short by a single goal (2-1).

Despite accusations of foul play, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) carried out a thorough investigation. CAF found no evidence of wrongdoing on the part of the Nigerian team or its players, clearing their names and upholding the integrity of the competition.

An Ode To AFCON 2023

While celebrating their AFCON victory, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and the 2021 champions, Senegal, found themselves facing disciplinary action from the CAF Disciplinary Board.

These prestigious teams faced the gavel of the CAF Disciplinary Board due to incidents during the tournament.

Specifically, the Board scrutinized the February 3rd knockout match between Mali and Cote d'Ivoire. During this heated contest, the Malian Football Federation was held accountable for their players' disrespectful behaviour towards the match official.

As a consequence, Malian player Hamari Traore was slapped with a four-match suspension, with two matches deferred for a year. Additionally, CAF fined the Malian Football Federation a hefty sum of 10,000 US dollars.
