'Tinubu is a strategic genius, we tried to stop him but couldn't' - Ex-PDP chairman Dan Ulasi

Former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dan Ulasi, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a seasoned political strategist who has consistently proven difficult to defeat.

Speaking on AIT's Kakaaki programme, Ulasi reflected on past political efforts aimed at unseating Tinubu, particularly during his tenure as the Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007.

He revealed that despite determined moves by the PDP and even former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Tinubu remained politically unshaken.

"There was nothing Obasanjo didn't do," Ulasi said. "We managed to take some South-West states, but Lagos was untouchable. He stayed strong for the entire eight years."

Ulasi, who also served as the Director of Atiku Abubakar's 2023 presidential campaign in the South East, disclosed that he had earlier warned his team about Tinubu's political prowess but was ignored.

"I told them Tinubu is not someone you just push aside," he recalled. "They didn't take me seriously. Today, he is President of Nigeria."

According to Ulasi, the PDP needs serious internal reorganization if it hopes to challenge Tinubu or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

He admitted that the party is struggling in opposition and still trying to adapt after years of being in power since 1999.

"We were not trained for opposition politics. We came into government directly from formation, and that lack of experience is showing now," he said.
