UNN student Rebecca debunks dating claims, denies knowing man behind trending photo

A student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Ifeme Rebecca Yahoma - popularly known as Becky - has released a public statement debunking widespread claims that she denied her boyfriend following a viral photo circulating online.

The controversy began after popular YouTuber and content creator Asherkine visited the university and took Rebecca on an expensive outing, which included shopping, a new phone, and other luxury items.

Before the outing, Asherkine asked Rebecca if she was in a relationship, and she responded that she had never had a boyfriend.

Shortly after the visit, a photo began trending on social media showing Rebecca with a man identified as Ken, who alleged that he was her boyfriend.

The image sparked criticism and accusations online, with many claiming she had denied him for the sake of clout or gain.

In response, Rebecca has now released a video statement, distancing herself from the man and the false claims. She described the situation as completely fabricated and expressed her shock over the online harassment.

"I'm here to debunk the whole story going around about me denying my boyfriend. First of all, the name "Becky Chinaza" he is using is not my name. I don't know who this person is," she said.

"The WhatsApp message he's been sharing across social media is not me - that isn't even my DP on WhatsApp. Even the replies don't sound like me. I don't speak that kind of English."

The UNN student went on to affirm her innocence and clarify that she has never been in a relationship.

"I am so much innocent of all these accusations. I will keep saying it - I do not have a boyfriend, and I have never, ever had a boyfriend."

"If he is claiming to be my boyfriend, he should bring more evidence and stop going to my TikTok to screenshot the videos I have already made and photoshopping them."

"Bring evidence that you and I are actually dating."

Rebecca's statement has drawn mixed reactions online, with many expressing support for her boldness in speaking up, while others continue to question the situation.

Meanwhile, the Department of Mass Communication at UNN had earlier issued its own statement backing the student and condemning the photo as fake and defamatory.
