Man Utd "have not stopped calling" to sign £55m-£59m star - Journalist

Viktor Gyokeres Sporting CP

Manchester United have fallen way down the cliff in terms of stature in recent seasons.

The Red Devils have been suffering on the sporting front in recent seasons, and the upcoming campaign could become make-or-break for Ruben Amorim.

Amorim has a lot of areas to address in the squad, and among them is the striker position.

Rasmus Hojlund has led the line at Old Trafford for much of the past couple of seasons but he has struggled to score goals on a frequent basis.

What Man Utd need is a number nine who is able to score goals at will and be able to finish off the chances that creators like Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo provide on a regular basis. Among those names include Viktor Gyokeres.

As per Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano in his exclusive column for Give Me Sport, Man Utd "have not stopped calling" to sign the Swedish striker with whom Amorim has worked during the duo's time together in Portugal.

A prolific striker

Gyokeres has been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe for a couple of seasons now.

The 27-year-old played 52 games across all competitions, scoring 54 goals and providing 13 assists. These numbers are quite astonishing.

As per Romano, Gyokeres would be allowed to leave for a fee of around £55m-£59m this summer. For the quality that he has shown over the last couple of seasons, the Swedish striker is definitely worth that price and Man Utd should be willing to spend.

The Italian has mentioned that Man Utd are likely to hold more talks over the signing in the coming weeks.

Gyokeres has a contract with Sporting until 2028 but he has an agreement with the Portuguese club to leave for the right fee.

Man Utd's attack this summer looks set to undergo a revamp. Matheus Cunha has already joined the club and Gyokeres could be the next one in line.
