In an unexpected and emotional encounter, Bala Muhammad, a survivor of the 2022 Abuja-Kaduna train attack, has revealed that he recently came face-to-face with one of his former abductors at a mosque in Kaduna and chose to forgive him.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Trust TV, Muhammad recounted the deeply personal moment and the powerful decision he made, despite the trauma he endured during his 197-day captivity following the train attack that left several passengers dead and many others kidnapped.
"I met one of our abductors at the mosque in Kaduna. I shook his hand, and he panicked. I told him to relax; he told me he repented and has left banditry. We sat and discussed a lot of things," Muhammad said.
According to Muhammad, the former bandit now works as a commercial motorcycle rider (okada) and was in a pitiable condition. Moved by the situation, Muhammad not only forgave him but also gave him a small amount of money and fuel for his motorcycle before letting him go.
Despite this profound act of forgiveness, Muhammad made it clear that his anger toward the Federal Government remains unresolved. He criticised the government for what he described as abandonment during one of the most difficult times in his life.
"I won't forgive the Federal Government because I left my wife with a four-month pregnancy while in captivity, and she gave birth through CS. The government did not support her with a kobo," he said.
Muhammad also recounted the traumatic events he witnessed during his time in captivity, including the killing of three people right beside him.
"I was not killed, and I give thanks to Allah," he added.
