"My Goal Is to Win AFCON for Nigeria": Super Eagles Coach Jose Peseiro Speaks

Jose Peseiro has his eyes set on winning the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations as he prepares to lead the Super Eagles against 23 other teams for the continent's biggest football prize.

Nigeria has failed to reach the final of the competition since 2013, when the late Steven Keshi led the team to the title after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Burkina Faso.

According to All Nigeria Soccer, Peseiro wants to make history for himself by becoming the man to end the Super Eagles' AFCON drought by winning the competition scheduled to kick off in Ivory Coast on January 13.

"I told everyone that I wanted to win the Africa Cup of Nations from the first moment I signed the contract with the Nigerian national team, and we study our opponents well in order to win, and this is what we seek to achieve."

Nigeria has been crowned AFCON champion three times in the past, first in 1980 when they hosted the tournament, before winning again in 1994 and 2013.

Presidency backs Super Eagles to triumph

Meanwhile, John Enoh, Nigeria's Minister of Sports Development, has underlined the Presidency's support for the Super Eagles' bid to win the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), Vanguard reports.

The statement underscores President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's resolute commitment and belief in Nigeria's Senior Men's National team's capabilities to excel in the prestigious tournament.

The Super Eagles, paired alongside Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau in Group A, are bidding to win Nigeria's fourth AFCON title.

Adepoju backs Super Eagles for AFCON

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Ex-Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju has approved the Super Eagles' final 25-man list for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and believes the team is good enough to win the title.

Manager Jose Peseiro released Nigeria's final squad to the competition in Ivory Coast, with top stars like Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi and Victor Boniface all making the final cut to the AFCON.

Adepoju opined that this is an opportunity for Nigeria to lift it's fourth continental title due to the pedigree of the players Peseiro has selected.
