Why are England playing Senegal in Nottingham and not at Wembley?

England v Senegal - International Friendly

England resume are back in action this evening against Senegal, but Thomas Tuchel's side will not be playing at Wembley Stadium.

The Three Lions made it three wins from three in World Cup qualifying on Saturday, but few were left enthused by the manner of England's narrow 1-0 win against lowly-ranked Andorra.

Tuchel's side will now hope for an improved showing as they take a break from their World Cup qualifying campaign to face Senegal in a friendly.

Pape Thiaw's side, ranked 19th in the FIFA world rankings, should provide a sterner test for England but perhaps also an opportunity to showcase their true attacking potential under Tuchel.

Traditionally playing their home games at the national stadium, England's match this evening will instead be staged at the City Ground, home of Premier League side Nottingham Forest.

Here's why.

Why are England playing Senegal at the City Ground?

Wembley will not be hosting tonight's England friendly as the stadium gears up for a slew of summer concerts in the coming weeks and months.

Dua Lipa, Coldplay and Oasis will all perform there for multiple nights this summer, while the heavyweight boxing bout between Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois will also take place at Wembley before England's next match in the national stadium.

'While I know Wembley is our home, I also understand the importance of taking the team around the country when we are able to and the opportunity to experience playing at a famous old English stadium such as the City Ground is one we can all look forward to,' Tuchel said of the move earlier in the year.

When was the last time England played in Nottingham?

The City Ground has not hosted a competitive England international since 1909, when they beat Wales 2-0 in a Home Championship match.

A wartime clash against Wales was also hosted at the City Ground back in 1941, with England coming out 4-1 victors.

Are England playing away from Wembley again this year?

England will play away from Wembley later in the year as well, taking on Andorra at Villa Park in September.
