Manchester United transfer news and opinion as Alejandro Garnacho's interest continues to ramp-up to hand United
Manchester United's fast-approach in the summer transfer window to land Matheus Cunha has raised expectations around the club for next season. But if they don't build on it, it'll be for nothing.
Ruben Amorim's side finished 15th in the Premier League and lost in the Europa League final meaning it is, officially, the club's worst season in 51 years. The Portuguese is being backed but a difficult start could see United repeat the Erik ten Hag sacking earlier this season.
United need at least two or three new players through the door. After Cunha, a striker to be the focal point followed by another attacking-creator is expected to be prioritised. A new goalkeeper and midfielder are also being linked.
As has been the case since January, player sales are going to play a crucial part in United getting the right signings through the door. Millions are expected to be raised through the sales of Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho but Alejandro Garnacho's exit could work out a treat.
The winger is increasingly likely to leave United this summer with Amorim understood to have informed him to find a new club. Garnacho nearly left the club in January and sparked further uncertainty with his comments in the aftermath of the Europa League defeat to Tottenham.
Interest in Italy has been apparent since the winter with Napoli reportedly still keen. However, recent revelations have reported that AC Milan have discussed Garnacho internally amid the unsettling situation with Rafael Leao.
According to Argentine outlet Ole, Milan have opened negotiations for Garnacho and believe £50million would be enough to get him out of Manchester and to the San Siro. Whilst that fee is slightly lower than the reported £65m that United would seek for the Argentine, accepting that proposal would be the perfect green light for Amorim's second signing.
Bryan Mbeumo is on United's radar and after scoring 20 Premier League goals this season, is destined for a move away from Brentford. Newcastle and Arsenal are also considering moves with the Bees reportedly demanding between £50m-£60m.
Thomas Frank has already confirmed that the club would be prepared to sell the Cameroonian international for an acceptable offer. "I'm the head coach, I want my best players to stay forever," Frank told Sky Sports.
"I know that Bryan is very happy being here at Brentford, he's thriving, doing well and playing fantastic. What happens in the future? I don't know. I've said many times: we are a selling club. But at the same time we have to reinforce that there are 10 clubs in the world who aren't selling clubs.
"So, of course, if the right price - and that's going to be expensive - is coming, then I'm sure the club will be open for it. But I'm very happy he's here, and I'm convinced that Bryan will still be happy playing football here."
Selling Garnacho, a player who doesn't suit Amorim's system, to bring in Mbeumo - one of the Premier League's most consistent performers in the past 12 months - for the same price would be a masterstroke from Ineos.
