Nigeria's Flying Eagles may have seen off Tunisia to secure three points in the U-20 AFCON, but they are yet to win over the fans
The Flying Eagles of Nigeria began their 2025 U-20 AFCON campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Tunisia.
But while the Flying Eagles secured three points, fans across social media are still not pleased with the performance of the Young Nigerians.
Flying Eagles edge Tunisia in tight affair
Aliyu Zubairu's boys got off to a flying start in Group B thanks to a 38th-minute goal from Auwal Ibrahim, who slotted home a neat pass from Odinaka Okoro.
The goal proved to be the difference for the Nigerian side as the Flying Eagles went into halftime with a slim advantage.
Tunisia pushed hard for an equaliser in the second half, creating nervy moments for the Nigerian defence as they battled to snatch a point from the encounter.
Both teams picked up several bookings in a feisty second period, but ultimately, the Flying Eagles held firm to claim all three points and a valuable win in their tournament opener.
Slim win sparks criticism
Despite the win, several fans expressed disappointment with the overall showing of the Flying Eagles, with one user on X describing the win over Tunisia as fortuitous.
Several comments on X decried the lack of cohesion in the young Flying Eagles squad, with some fingers being pointed at coach Zubairu for his team's perceived lack of organisation.
Although the complaints were numerous, there were still a few comments praising the Flying Eagles for getting the job done, especially for Auwal Ibrahim's well-taken goal.
With Morocco up next on Sunday, May 4, 2025, fans will be hoping for an improved team performance when Nigeria take on the Young Atlas Lions.
