AFCON 2023: Senegal's Coach Aliou Cisse hospitalized after victory against Cameroon

The Senegal coach will spend the night at the hospital after being hurriedly admitted in Ivory Coast.

Senegal's head coach, Aliou Cisse, was hospitalised following the team's 3-1 victory against Cameroon in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. After the match at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium, Cisse experienced stomach discomfort and was admitted to Saint Joseph Moscati Catholic Hospital in Yamoussoukro.

Despite the health scare, reports indicate that the 47-year-old coach is recovering well. However, he will miss the team's training session the following day.

El Hadji Diouf provided updates on Cisse's health

El Hadji Diouf, a former international teammate of Cisse, provided some reassurance about his condition.

Diouf mentioned that Cisse is doing well, highlighting that football can bring a lot of stress, which can sometimes manifest in physical symptoms like stomach aches. Diouf had spoken to Cisse over the phone and confirmed his positive recovery.

Cisse's Illness at Major Tournaments

This incident has raised concerns within the Senegalese camp, as Cisse is a key figure for the team. He has been the coach of Senegal since 2015 and led the Teranga Lions to success in the delayed 2021 AFCON tournament in Cameroon. Under his leadership, Senegal also reached the Round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Senegal, having already qualified for the knockout stage of the AFCON 2023 with victories in their opening matches, hopes to have Cisse back for their final Group C game against Guinea. A draw in this match would be sufficient for them to finish top of their group. The situation is reminiscent of the 2022 World Cup, where Cisse was also ill but managed to recover in time for an important game.
