AFCON 2023: Record-breaking 8000 OAU students watch Nigeria's final defeat to Ivory Coast

A record number of OAU students were gathered and watched the AFCON 2023 final between Nigeria and Ivory Coast.

Students of Obafemi Awolowo Univerisity (OAU) put their names in Nigerian football history books during the AFCON 2023 final between the Super Eagles and the Elephants of Ivory Coast.

The students set a record for the largest viewing of a football match ever in Nigeria, with a reported record of more than 8000 students gathered at the Oduduwa Hall.

They came out in their numbers to watch and support their darling Super Eagles play and gun for victory, a match that was watched by millions of people worldwide.

Unfortunately, Nigeria lost 2-1 to a spirited Ivorian team, with goals from Frank Kessie and Sebastian Haller, after Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong opened the scoreline in the first half.

It was a perfect fairytale ending for Ivory Coast to win the tournament for the third time in AFCON history, while Nigerians were left in the disappointment of losing another prestigious final.

The AFCON 2023 tournament surpassed viewership record of previous years as over 2 billion people worldwide tuned in to watch throughout the matchdays, making it the biggest sporting championship in 2024 so far
