Hamas Could have ended this on October 8 by not hiding behind civilians, by surrendering -Blinken

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated his support for Israel's objective to prevent a recurrence of the lethal Hamas attack on October 7, recognizing the nation's legitimate right to self-defense against the perceived threat from Hamas. Blinken conveyed the United States' eagerness for a swift resolution to the ongoing conflict during a Tel Aviv press conference covered by Al Jazeera.

In his statements, Blinken laid blame on Hamas for the suffering caused by the war, contending that the group had the chance to opt for a peaceful path but instead chose violence. This narrative positioned Hamas as the primary instigator of the ongoing conflict, underscoring the U.S. acknowledgment of Israel's right to defend itself. Blinken's remarks mirror a U.S. position that seeks a prompt resolution while steadfastly supporting Israel's security.

Furthermore, Blinken proposed that an expedited conclusion to the conflict could be achieved if Hamas made different choices. However, he issued a stern warning that the United States would not accept any resolution jeopardizing Israel's security.

"Hamas could have ended this on October 8 by not hiding behind civilians, by putting down its weapons, by surrendering, by releasing the hostages. None of the suffering would have happened if Hamas hadn't done what it did on October 7 and if it made different decisions thereafter," Blinken said.

Blinken highlighted the potential for a swift resolution to the conflict if Hamas made specific choices. However, he underscored that the United States would not tolerate any agreement that puts Israel's security at risk.

"The US is committed to working with our partners to achieve a lasting and just peace, but we will not allow Hamas to dictate the terms of the future. Israel has the right to prevent another October 7, and we stand with them in that effort," Blinken said.
