Why We Detained Air Force Personnel Who Attacked Our Office To Release Fraudsters In Custody - EFCC

Newsmen reports that on November 13, 2023, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reported a "face-off" with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) following the arrest of five suspects for alleged internet-related fraud in Kaduna. The individuals apprehended were identified as Favour Itung, Rachael Ande, Zuleiman Haruna, Abubakar Ismaila, and Solomon Olobatoke. Six military personnel, including four Air Force personnel (Lawal Abdullahi, Chukwuma Chidi Christian, Alfa Suleiman, and Emmanuel Ekwozor) and two students from the Nigerian Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) (Chidera Anuba and Joseph Tokula), attempted to forcibly release the suspects after the operation.

The NAF officers were detained over the security breach. Subsequently, there were discussions between EFCC and NAF leadership to resolve the issues. However, a breakdown in dialogue occurred, leading to unruly NAF officers attempting to forcefully release their colleagues in a commando-style operation. Despite the provocation, EFCC exercised restraint and later released the detained officers to the NAF Provost after proper profiling. The EFCC emphasized its commitment to carrying out its statutory mandate of addressing economic and financial crimes without succumbing to hindrance.
