World Championships: Favour Ofili and Alaba Akintola advance to 200m semis in Budapest

Favour Ofili and Alaba Akintola qualified for the 200m semifinals at the World Championships in Budapest.

Nigeria's star girl Favour Ofili and Alaba Akintola respectively made it into the 200m semis at the World Championships in Budapest.

Ofili, who had an injury plagued this season and making her first international appearance since winning a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, raced in heat 1, and finished fourth in 22.66s.

Bahamian Anthonique Strachan won the race in 22.31s, ahead of Great Britain's Daryll Neita in 22.39s and Spaniard Jael Bestue in 22.58s.

Ofili's time was fast enough to place in one of the non-automatic qualifying spots, which secured her spot in the semifinal.

Consequently, Akintola advanced to the semifinal in an automatic qualifying spot with a third-place finish in 20.54s, behind race winner Kenneth Bednarek in 20.01s and Alexander Ogando in 20.14s.

Both Ofili and Akintola will run in the semifinals, hoping to get a final spot, which will be the first time for a Nigerian athlete in so many years.
