EPL: Man Utd legend reveals Alex Ferguson offered him £100,000 to retire

Manchester United legend, Paul McGrath has revealed that the club's former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson offered him £100,000 to retire from playing football during his time at Old Trafford.

McGrath, who is regarded as one of the best defenders of his time, spent seven years at Man United and helped the Premier League giants win the FA Cup in 1985.

But his time at the Red Devils was ended by Ferguson, who sought to put a stop to the drinking culture at the club.

"Sir Alex [Ferguson] got me into the room and just said, 'we would like you to stop playing football'," McGrath told The Telegraph.

"Simple as that. And he said they were willing to give me £100,000 to quit playing football altogether and just go back to Ireland.

"But I spoke to Kevin Moran and Bryan Robson, and I just said I wanted to play on because I thought I could still do something in football."
