But Ronaldo has made it clear to the club is keen to quit Old Trafford after just 12 months, with the 37-year-old determined to continue playing in the Champions League.

United finished sixth last season in the Premier League to miss out on playing in Europe's elite competition and have made a woeful start to this campaign, losing to Brighton and being humbled 4-0 by Brentford.

Erik ten Hag has insisted all summer that Ronaldo is not for sale and is a key part of his plans.

But the Dutchman's stance has now changed and he is understood to be willing to sanction his exit.

Concerns have been raised about Ronaldo's attitude and impact on the dressing room in recent weeks and it looks inevitable that he will depart before the transfer window closes on September 1.

United are ramping up their search for a new striker, meanwhile, and are closing in on signing Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha for a fee of around £42million, talkSPORT understands.

Atletico could be an option for Ronaldo, with Diego Simeone keen on taking the striker back to Madrid, while Chelsea showed interest earlier in the summer.

Ronaldo netted 24 goals for Man United last season and was a silver lining in an otherwise below par campaign for the Red Devils.
