Sony Reiterates Big PS5 Pro Graphics Upgrade for 2026

PS5 Pro Push Square

PlayStation console architect Mark Cerny has reiterated Sony's plans to deliver a substantial PS5 Pro visuals upgrade at some point next year.

The enhancement would come by way of an overhaul of the PSSR system, which will be much improved through Sony's collaboration with AMD, where it's researching the technology behind machine learning. As a result of this, Cerny states the "full-fat version" of PSSR will go live in 2026, as part of an interview with Tom's Guide.

PSSR, or PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, is an upscaling technology similar to NVidia's DLSS feature that works to enhance picture quality and displays games at a higher resolution. This lets teams utilise the PS5 Pro's extra power in other areas, leaving PSSR to do the heavy lifting for visual resolutions. You can learn more in a PSSR-dedicated guide.

Now, as a result of its AMD collaboration, Sony has discovered an improved method of delivering PSSR, which is an easy "drop-in replacement" that's designed to be "straightforward" for developers to make use of. This upscaling algorithm took around nine months to create, which is a much quicker result than Mark Cerny expected to come out of Project Amethyst (the term given to the collaboration).

"The algorithm they came up with could be implemented on current-generation hardware," he said. "So the co-developed algorithm has already been released by AMD as part of FSR 4 on PC. And we're in the process of implementing it on PS5 and it will release next year on PS5 Pro."

The FSR 4 technology currently available on PC is a different algorithm to PSSR, but Cerny stresses that what PS5 Pro will receive is still every bit as good as it. "It's not a cut-down [version] of the algorithm. It's the full-fat version of the co-developed super resolution that we'll be releasing on PS5 Pro," he added.
