Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed the new club captain for the 2025/26 season.
Bernardo Silva will captain Manchester City at the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup in the US, with the Portuguese star revealing he could depart when his contract expires in June 2026.
According to the Guardian, the 30-year-old, who joined City in 2017, remains one of Pep Guardiola's most trusted players, earning the nod to lead the team's campaign, starting with their opener against Wydad on Wednesday.
When asked about his future, Silva, whose contract runs for one more year, remained focused but left the door open for a potential exit.
"I know what I'm going to do, but it's not the time to talk about that," Silva said. "I'm very focused on my season. I'm very focused on performing well for Man City. When the time is due, I will talk about it. I have one year left on my contract, so obviously I can leave next season.
"This season will for sure be with Man City. I'm going to stay. I've had options in the past and this year, like last year and this year, my option is to stay at Man City."
Silva's selection as captain comes as a bit of a surprise, especially with players like Ruben Dias and Rodri seen as more natural leaders than the Portuguese.
