Arokodare says he just wants to enjoy his holiday in peace after scoring his first international goal for Nigeria.

Fresh from his debut international goal in Nigeria's 1-1 friendly draw against Russia, Super Eagles forward Toluwalase Arokodare has issued a pointed message to fans, urging them to stop bombarding his social media with requests for money.

The 24-year-old, who plies his trade with KRC Genk in Belgium, returned to Lagos, Nigeria, for the summer holidays and was quickly swept into online drama after responding to a follower on Snapchat.

What happened?

Known for his humour and sarcasm, Arokodare's reply drew ire from some an internet user who accused him of mocking Nigerians who seek financial help.

In a lengthy statement via his verified Snapchat account, he clarified:

"I'm sorry Mr Chairman Sir. I've begged you people too please stop coming here to beg me. See now human rights activist don come here dey fight me... I don't mock or make fun of anybody o please. All I do is reply to questions but this uncle now has come here to drag me."

In typical witty fashion, he added:

"Small thing wey I do now them don call me Maui from Moana (Demigod). Love and light sir. Please let me enjoy my holiday thank you sir."

Not the first to speak up

Arokodare's frustration isn't isolated.

Over the years, several Nigerian footballers - including Victor Boniface, Asisat Oshoala, amongst others, have pushed back against the rising trend of cyber-begging.

While many fans defend their actions as desperate pleas during hard times, others agree that athletes deserve peace and privacy, especially during downtime.

Arokodare's message echoes the same sentiment that fame doesn't equate to obligation.

And as social media becomes increasingly personal and public, the line between access and entitlement might become blurry.

Debut goal joy for Arokodare

Still, the online episode has not overshadowed a celebratory week for Arokodare.

After coming off the bench against Russia, he netted a 71st-minute equaliser following a goalkeeping error, marking his first ever goal for Nigeria.

On X, he posted proudly:

"First international goal, the journey has only just started. We thank God."

The Super Eagles had earlier fallen behind due to an unfortunate own goal, but Arokodare's poise in the box brought the match level, giving fans a glimpse of what he can offer ahead of the next competitive fixtures.

At just 24 and fresh off a season that earned him the Ebony Shoe Award 2025, the towering striker is finding his feet on the international stage.

If anything, his recent experience shows that the pressure doesn't end on the pitch.
