FG begins payment of ₦35,000 wage award arrears to civil servants

The Federal Government (FG) has officially commenced the payment of the long-awaited N35,000 wage award arrears to federal civil servants across the country.

This was confirmed in a statement released on Monday by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), which revealed that several workers have already begun receiving credit alerts, while others will be paid in the coming days.

According to the Director of Press and Public Relations at the OAGF, Bawa Mokwa, all outstanding payments will be made in line with the government's promise to its workforce.

"The Federal Government has commenced payment of the N35,000 wage award arrears to federal government workers," the statement read.

The move to settle the wage award arrears comes after months of agitation from labour unions and civil servants, who repeatedly demanded the fulfilment of the government's promises.

The N35,000 monthly wage award was one of the palliative measures introduced to cushion the economic hardship triggered by the removal of fuel subsidies.

It was agreed upon after negotiations between the Federal Government and organised labour unions in 2023.

Meanwhile, labour unions have called on the government to ensure transparency and consistency in the payment process.
