Rivers: 'My spirit has left govt house, I'm not desperate to return' - Fubara

Embattled Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has stated that he is no longer interested in returning to office, revealing that his "spirit has already left" the Government House.

Fubara made this statement during a service of songs in Port Harcourt on Sunday, held in honor of the late elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark.

"This is my first time speaking publicly since the events of March 18," Fubara said.

"I've attended several gatherings, but I've been careful with my words. When the mood of an event doesn't align with my beliefs, I feel uncomfortable-because many of you don't truly understand the situation."

He went on to emphasize that he is not desperate to return to his former position, suggesting that he now enjoys peace of mind and better health.

"Do you think I'm even interested in going back? Just look at me-I look better now. I have peace. If I had my way, I wouldn't go back there. My spirit left Government House long ago," he added.

Fubara also urged attendees not to politicize the memorial event, stressing the importance of honoring Clark's legacy rather than turning the occasion into a political rally.

"This program is a tribute to Pa Clark. It's not about Sim Fubara," he said. "Even though I respect the message from the bishop, today is not the time for political declarations. Otherwise, people will leave here saying Fubara gathered his supporters to attack the minister or the President. That's not my mission."

The suspended governor expressed concern that some actions by his supporters might have unintentionally worsened the political crisis in the state.

"Inasmuch as we must stand with those who made sacrifices for us, that doesn't mean we should start shooting blindly. Let us stay focused," Fubara advised.

The political crisis in Rivers State escalated following a dispute between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

President Bola Tinubu intervened by declaring a state of emergency on March 18, 2025, suspending Fubara, his deputy, and the state legislature, and appointing a sole administrator to oversee the state's affairs.
