Road Project: Gov Adeleke orders review after community protest

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered a comprehensive review of a 4.76-kilometre road project in Aduramigba community, Ido-Osun, following protests by residents over alleged substandard construction work.

The directive was issued on Saturday after members of the Aduramigba community held a peaceful demonstration to express dissatisfaction with the quality of work carried out by the contractor handling the project on Friday.

We reported that the residents of the community protested the shoddy state of the road project.

Protesters had carried placards bearing messages such as 'We say no to no drainage and stone base road' and 'Don't cause quick pain for six communities', alleging the absence of proper drainage and poor road surfacing.

Community chairman, Sunday Ogundele, while addressing the protesters on Friday criticised the construction process and noted that rainfall had already damaged parts of the freshly tarred road.

"The quality of this road is so poor. They started tarring on Sunday and Monday, but rainfall on Thursday washed away the asphalt in some portions," Ogundele stated.

Responding to the protest, Governor Adeleke's spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, in a statement on Saturday, confirmed that officials from the Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Works, and the O-RAMP Project had been deployed to the area.

"The team visited the community to assess the condition of the road, engage with residents, and deliver Governor Adeleke's directive for an immediate review and necessary remedial actions.

"The team related to Governor Adeleke's directive for an immediate review of the work done on the road while directing remedial action in line with best practices.

"The team also assured the community that apart from a review and a follow-up remedial work, the Governor is also looking into other pressing needs of the community.

"The team is also currently interfacing with the contractors and the project managers to collate reports and determine an immediate remediation action.

"The government team is to report back to the Governor by Monday, after which further corrective decisions will be taken," the statement reads.
