Cody Gakpo might face potential FA ban for 'I Belong to Jesus' celebration
Liverpool's Cody Gakpo is set to face disciplinary action from the Football Association after his emotional celebration following a crucial goal in their 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
Gakpo scored Liverpool's third goal, securing a vital victory that effectively sealed the Premier League title for the Reds.
The Dutch forward celebrated his goal by lifting his jersey, revealing an undershirt with the phrase "I belong to Jesus," echoing Kaka's iconic gesture in the 2007 Champions League final.
This act earned Gakpo a yellow card and may lead to further sanctions.
The Rules
According to Law 4 of the International Football Association Board's Laws of the Game, players are prohibited from displaying political, religious, or personal slogans.
The rule states, "Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images. Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images, or advertising other than the manufacturer's logo".
Gakpo has previously spoken about the importance of his faith.
In a 2023 interview, he mentioned, "My religion helps not only my career but my whole life. It's a lifestyle kind of thing for me. I take the Bible with me every day, whether it's in the UK or wherever else".
Potential consequences
The FA is assessing the incident and may issue a formal reprimand. Gakpo's actions have sparked debate about the FA's enforcement of rules regarding religious expressions.
Gakpo is expected to be available for Liverpool's upcoming match against Chelsea on May 4, pending any further action from the governing body.
