Ikwerre Local Government Area Chairman Dr. Samuel Nwanosike of Rivers State has promised not to step down from his post when his tenure ends on June 16-in the midst of the ongoing political crisis in the state. Dr. Nwanosike reportedly told the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, that he would continue serving beyond the specified end date, according to Punch.
His argument was that the state administration's incapacity to conduct local government elections had led to the extension of the chairmen's tenures by the Rivers State House of Assembly, which was headed by Martin Amaewhule. In compliance with the MPs' directive, he declared that he will remain in his role as chairman of the local government beyond June 16. After June 16, he warned that the people of Ikwerre will resist any effort to have him removed from office. If they dare, they can come and try to remove me, he said.
