Israel, US shoot down '300 Iranian drones and missiles'

Israel says alongside allies, it has intercepted more than 300 drones and missiles launched by Iran on Saturday.

According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), a small number of missiles landed on Israeli territory, including on an IDF base in southern Israel, with one person left injured.

Saturday's reprisal attack from Iran was the first time it has targeted Israel directly from its own soil.

Iran attacked Israel as a retaliation for a strike that killed an Iranian military commander in Damascus in early April.

Tehran had accused Israel of carrying out the Damascus attack.

The BBC reports that loud explosions and sirens were heard over Jerusalem all night, with air defence systems shooting down objects over the city.

President Joe Biden of the United States has assured Israel of the "ironclad" support of the US, adding that America helped "take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles".

The UK has also declared its support for Israel.
