I'm not desperate to be president, I'm desperate to see Nigeria working for poor people- Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, has urged the federal government to impose taxes on wealthy Nigerians in order to provide affordable electricity for the poor. He made this statement while commissioning a water project that he had donated to the Sabo Layi Community in Bauchi.

According to Punch, Obi explained that he had been visiting various communities across the country to understand the challenges faced by the people and determine how he could assist them. He emphasized that the solution to the electricity tariff issue was simple: the government could increase the tariff for those who could afford it, while ensuring that the majority of Nigerians who are suffering are supported.

According to Obi, the key to poverty alleviation lies in promoting production rather than consumption. He emphasized the need to support small businesses and ensure that the tariff burden does not disproportionately affect them compared to larger businesses. "I'm not desperate to be president, I'm desperate to see Nigeria working for poor people".He stressed the importance of empowering people in order to lift them out of poverty.

Addressing rumors of him leaving the Labour Party, Obi clarified that the party was not the problem; rather, the challenges facing Nigeria were much larger. He reaffirmed his commitment to a new Nigeria and stated that his focus was on the betterment of the country. He highlighted the importance of addressing the basic needs of the people, such as access to clean water and food.

Obi expressed his dedication to seeing Nigeria thrive and emphasized his concern for the welfare of the poor. He stated that his goal was not merely to become president but to witness positive change and improvement in the lives of impoverished Nigerians. He stressed the urgency of addressing the current state of affairs, emphasizing that the country cannot continue on its current path.
