Martinez, Eriksen, Amad - Manchester United injury news and return dates ahead of Tottenham clash

All the very latest on the Man United injury front ahead of Sunday's Premier League encounter with Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and Casemiro chat after the opening game of Manchester United's pre-season tour in the US last July.

Following Monday night's 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic in the fourth round of the FA Cup, attention now switches to Sunday's Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur for Manchester United.

The Reds started 2024 with a routine win over the League One Latics, booking a fourth round date with either Newport County or Eastleigh at the end of January. The two aforementioned clubs go head-to-head in a third round replay next week.

But before manager Erik ten Hag can start planning for the next round of the FA Cup, he needs to try and ensure United get back to winning ways in the league this forthcoming weekend. The Reds lost their last league outing a little over a week ago, being beaten 2-1 by Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

That marked a fourth defeat in their last seven Premier League matches. Following the reverse on the banks of the Trent, Ten Hag vowed that United would improve and start climbing the table once they had recovered members of the squad through injury.

The Reds are expected to welcome several key figures back at some point this month, including the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Mason Mount. With that said, MEN Sport has taken a close look at the current state of play on the injury front ahead of the tussle with Spurs.

Lisandro Martinez
Martinez was filmed back in first-team training at Carrington last week, training alongside the rest of the squad. He has been sidelined since September after undergoing a second round of surgery on a recurring foot problem.

Ten Hag, last month, named Martinez as one of the members of the injured group that would return at some point in January. It is now understood that a realistic comeback date for the Argentine international will be the FA Cup clash with Newport or Eastleigh over the final weekend of the month.

Possible return date: January 27/28.

Harry Maguire
Fellow centre-back Maguire has been absent since mid-December, after being forced off during the 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League with a groin problem. Absent once again against Wigan, it is possible that he could make the squad for Sunday's tussle with Spurs, with Ten Hag admitting that date could "potentially" be realistic.

Possible return date: January 14.

Victor Lindelof
Lindelof recently underwent groin surgery after suffering an injury in early-December. His absence, however, is not expected to be long-term, meaning he could return at some point this month, though an exact timeframe has not been specified.

Possible return date: January.

Luke Shaw
Shaw has missed each of United's last three matches with an unspecified injury and illness, last featuring against West Ham United on December 23. He could return against Spurs.

Possible return date: January 14.

Tyrell Malacia
Sidelined since pre-season because of a knee injury, Malacia, signed from Feyenoord in the 2022 summer transfer window, is edging closer and closer towards a return. He is another player who could return at some point in the next few weeks.

Possible return date: January.

Casemiro
Like Martinez, Casemiro is another long-term absentee closing in on a return to action. He was spotted participating in a training session at Carrington last week.

He was once again unavailable against Wigan, and it is poised to be the same story against Spurs. He could be fit enough to participate in the FA Cup fourth round at the end of this month.

Possible return date: January 27/28.

Mason Mount
Mount has been sidelined for almost two months with a calf injury, last featuring when United beat Luton Town 1-0 at Old Trafford on November 11. As is the case with Martinez and Casemiro, United are optimistic that he could feature against Newport or Eastleigh before the end of this month.

Possible return date: January 27/28.

Christian Eriksen
Danish international Eriksen was a surprise absentee from the matchday squad at the DW Stadium on Monday night, missing out through illness. Fortunately, it is not thought to be anything serious, meaning he could feature against his former club on Sunday.

Possible return date: January 14.

Amad
Winger Amad also missed the clash with Wigan through illness. He was in contention to earn his first start of the season after stepping off the bench in the defeat at Forest just over a week earlier.

The severity of his illness is not currently known. It remains to be seen if he will be available for the weekend.

Possible return date: Unknown.

Antony
Antony was substituted less than 10 minutes into the second half against Forest and was replaced by Amad. It was rumoured at the time that he had suffered a hamstring blow, but those fears were eased when he was spotted training at Carrington in preparation for the clash with Wigan.

However, he failed to make the matchday squad at the DW Stadium, missing out through injury. The severity of it is yet to be made clear by the club.

Possible return date: Unknown.

Anthony Martial
Martial has been missing since United's 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on December 9, meaning he has played no part in each of the club's last six matches. He is still sidelined through illness and United have not shared a recent update on his condition, meaning it is currently known when he may next be available.

Possible return date: Unknown.
