In less than a week until Christmas, the cost of poultry birds in Ibadan is expected to surpass last year's prices, primarily due to the current surge in inflation, particularly affecting the expenses associated with bird feeding.
As per a recent survey among Ibadan's poultry farmers, information gathered by Torizone indicates that Ibadan residents should anticipate poultry bird prices not falling below N10,000 for fowl and N25,000 for turkeys.
Jumoke Olagunju, a poultry farmer located in Challenge Ibadan, stated, "This year, the prices of poultry birds will be elevated. Buyers are acquiring them at increased costs, and consequently, they will be sold at higher prices. I plan to sell female turkeys to resellers for ₦9,000 to ₦10,000 and male turkeys for ₦24,000 to ₦25,000."
Currently, a giant local turkey is priced at approximately ₦30,000, with the female counterpart at around ₦12,000. In contrast, foreign giant turkeys are available at ₦70,000 and ₦80,000, while the female counterparts are priced at ₦50,000 and ₦60,000. Engr. Omoyeni, a poultry farmer from Onibure, Ibadan, notes that the prevailing circumstances, particularly the soaring cost of feeding, contribute to these elevated prices.
Offering insights into potential poultry bird prices, Mr. Adewole Kehinde from Olorunda, Ibadan, a poultry farmer, told newsmen that, "This season, I plan to sell local giant turkeys ranging from ₦25,000 to ₦35,000, depending on their weight and size. Imported giant turkeys are priced between ₦40,000 to ₦60,000. As for broilers, the cost varies from ₦7,000 to ₦12,000, depending on their size and weight."
