Tottenham vs Liverpool: PGMOL explain why Diaz goal was ruled as offside

The Premier League's body of referees have explained why Luis Diaz' goal for Liverpool against Tottenham was ruled out

Liverpool are set to receive a statement of apology from the Premier League's body of referees, the PGMOL, which revealed the reasons for ruling out Luis Diaz' goal against Tottenham.

Diaz goal ruled out in error

Diaz thought he had given Liverpool the lead in the first half when he ran on to a through ball to finish past Guglielmo Vicario in Tottenham's goal, but the Colombian's joy was cut short when the goal was ruled out for offside by the linesman.

The decision to rule out Diaz' goal was upheld by the centre-referee Simon Hooper after a VAR review, but PGMOL have now revealed that it was all a mistake and the goal should have stood.

The refereeing body released a statement after the game, revealing a clear and significant error had been made by the on-pitch referees in ruling out Diaz' goal.

The statement noted that "PGMOL acknowledges a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool."

PGMOL admit error in Diaz goal

PGMOL have also noted that the goal scored by Diaz in the first half when the score was still 0-0 should have been allowed to stand, and that they would be sending Liverpool an apology to acknowledge the error made by Hooper and Co.

They added, "The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention. However, the VAR failed to intervene.

"PGMOL will immediately be contacting Liverpool at the conclusion of the fixture to acknowledge the error."

Liverpool endured a horrific day at the hands of the referee against Tottenham, as they also lost thanks to a late Joel Matip own goal after being reduced to nine men.
