Mykhailo Mudryk stopped playing crossbar game with Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea because he kept losing

Mauricio Pochettino may have hung up his boots 17 years ago but the Chelsea boss still fancies his chances at the crossbar challenge.

The Argentine took the helm at the Blues during the summer and has so far overseen a poor start to the season.

Chelsea have won just once in the Premier League after six games and are languishing in 14th in the table.

A key problem for them so far is their inability to take their chances in front of goal despite having an abundance of attacking quality.

One of those who has struggled since signing is Mykhailo Mudryk, who is yet to score a competitive goal for the club.

The Ukrainian appears to be lacking in belief during games and now seemingly on the training pitch with the crossbar challenge.

Speaking on building confidence in his players on Tuesday, Pochettino said: "The problem with confidence is we cannot buy it in the supermarket.

"It is about time. You know how it works in the brain. It is about little by little creating situations that can provide the trust and the confidence and the belief.

"One example: today, with Mudryk, I like to play hitting the crossbar from outside the box. He said to me today: 'No, I'm not going to play any more with you because always you win.'

"I said: 'Yes, because I have the belief - the balance between belief and quality I know very well because I am 50 years old and you are still young.' Today was the first time that we draw.

"Now you start to believe in yourself, you start to believe in your quality because, if not, it is not good balance in between belief and quality. It is difficult.

"You work on the psychology of the player and provide the players with the confidence to touch the ball and score. It's a small example."

Mudryk has started in Chelsea's last two matches, a 0-0 draw away at Bournemouth and a 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa.

Although he is yet to score or assist this season, the 22-year-old has been a bright spark in a struggling side.

Chelsea's other competitive win this season came in the Carabao Cup against AFC Wimbledon and set up a third round tie against Brighton.

The Blues, who are winless and scoreless in their last three, host the Seagulls on Wednesday night and will hope to finally secure a victory.
