Manchester United seriously consider signing £28m Spurs player

Manchester United could ditch a move for Chelsea left back Marc Cucurella by instead pushing to sign Tottenham Hotspur misfit Sergio Reguilon.

The last few days have been full of rumours about potential left backs heading to Old Trafford.

Luke Shaw has picked up an injury which will see him miss up to three months whilst Tyrell Malacia remains out.

That means United are now looking for a short-term solution at left back to cover and a number of names have been linked.

Marcos Alonso, Nicolas Tagliafico and Rico Henry have been mentioned but United's decision could come down to two Spanish Premier League left backs.

Manchester United could now go for Sergio Reguilon over Marc Cucurella

Chelsea left back Marc Cucurella had seemingly emerged as the top target having fallen out of favour at Chelsea.

However, The Athletic's David Ornstein now claims that United are 'seriously considering' signing Tottenham Hotspur's Sergio Reguilon instead.

It's stated that Cucurella is 'still in play' for United but a move has been complicated because he played for Chelsea last night.

Cucurella featured for Chelsea in their narrow Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday night.

That means Cucurella would be cup-tied moving forward and United would seemingly prefer to sign somebody who can cover in all competitions.

There is also the factor of United potentially wanting a break clause in January to return the new left back to his parent club once Shaw and Malacia are fit.

Cucurella's appearance last night complicates matters and Reguilon is now emerging as a serious target for United ahead of the transfer deadline.

Reguilon will be desperate to leave Tottenham Hotspur

United have no such qualms with Reguilon; he didn't even feature in Tottenham's Carabao Cup defeat to Fulham on Tuesday night.

That makes it pretty clear that Reguilon has no future under Ange Postecoglou and Spurs would love to move him on.

Reguilon fell out of favour under Antonio Conte and spent last season on loan with Atletico Madrid, starting just two La Liga games.

The 26-year-old needs to get his career back on track and he would surely jump at the chance to join United.

Reguilon - signed for £28million from Real Madrid in 2020 - would be able to put himself in the shop window or even perform so well that United can't ignore a permanent move.

That seems unlikely with Shaw and Malacia in the picture but Reguilon will be desperate to move on and play regularly again.
