US Vice President Harris calls Tinubu, makes demands after coup in Niger

The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, engaged in a significant conversation with Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu on Friday. Their discussion encompassed a wide array of crucial matters, including the defense of democracy in the West Africa and Sahel regions, as well as the advancement of digital inclusion and economic growth.

Although VP Harris refrained from providing explicit details about the topics covered during her conversation with Tinubu, it is speculated that the recent military coup in the neighboring Niger Republic might have been a key focus of their discussion.

Notably, President Bola Tinubu currently holds the esteemed position of Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), further highlighting the importance of the dialogue between the two leaders.

This exchange between the United States Vice President and the Nigerian President underscores the commitment of both nations to address pressing regional issues and work collaboratively toward fostering democracy, stability, and socio-economic progress in the West Africa and Sahel regions.

VP Harris wrote: "Today, I spoke with President Tinubu of Nigeria about the strong ties between the Nigerian and American people and our shared work on global and regional issues-from defending democracy in West Africa and the Sahel to promoting digital inclusion and economic growth."

The Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, Francisca Omayuli, said in a statement Thursday: "This unconstitutional change of government is unacceptable at a time when concerted efforts are being made to stabilize the sub-region and uphold the principles of democracy and good governance."

She added: "In line with the pronouncement of the Chair of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Nigeria calls for the immediate and unconditional release of President Mohamed Bazoum, his family members and other civilians being detained; and reversion to status quo ante."

The soldiers announced ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum from power on Thursday.

The coupists detained Bazoum throughout Wednesday as military trucks were used to block and cordon off the presidential palace, engendering fear of an impending military takeover in the West African country.
