Chelsea in talks to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona

Memphis Depay is pushing to leave Barcelona

Chelsea have made an approach to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona, according to reports in Spain.

Chelsea are already closing in on the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after agreeing a deal with Barcelona on Thursday.

The deal will see Chelsea pay €7.5 million (£6.5m) for Aubameyang, while Marcos Alonso will join Barcelona as part of the agreement.

AS and Gerard Romero are reporting that Chelsea are also in discussions with Barca over a potential deal for Depay before Thursday's 11pm transfer deadline.

Romero reports that Depay is keen to leave Barcelona as he knows he is not a key part of Xavi's plans for the season and that could impact his chances of making the Netherlands squad for their World Cup campaign in Qatar later this year.

The 28-year-old has not featured in La Liga this season and has been left on the bench in all three of Barca's games so far.

It's claimed that Depay has asked to leave Barcelona and talks have begun with Chelsea about a possible deal, but no agreement has been reached.

AS report that while Depay is not a focal point of Xavi's plans at Barcelona, the club do not want to leave themselves short of attacking options having allowed Aubameyang and Martin Braithwaite to leave the club on Thursday.

Depay came close to leaving Barca 10 days ago but his move to Juventus fell through after he failed to agree personal terms with the Serie A club.

The former Manchester United winger was ready to terminate his contract with Barcelona, which still has a year remaining, while Juventus were not due to pay a transfer fee as they were willing to waive bonus payments owed to them by Barca as part of the Miralem Pjanic deal.

However, Juventus were put off by Depay's wage demands and option to sign Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik on loan from Marseille.
