Crucial Juventus star set to sign new contract, to play professional football until 44

There are reports that Juventus are preparing to offer their 42-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon yet another contract which will see him remain at the club until he is 44, Sport Bible reports.

Buffon's latest contract lapses in the summer of 2021, but Tuttosport is reporting that the goalkeeper is ready to extend his contract with the Serie A club for another one year.

However, the publication claims Buffon extending his contract beyond 2021 'is not to be excluded' with his career length potentially spanning 27 seasons.

His former team-mates, Francesco Totti and Fabio Cannavaro have charged that their fellow World Cup winner will not stop playing until he is forced to.

"I'll tell you; Gigi wants to play until he's 50. But he can play for two or three more seasons.

"Besides, he's in goal and is a back-up," Totti told former Italy captain Cannavaro on Instagram.

Cannavaro further stated that Buffon has a never-give-up mentality and be believes the goalkeeper does not want to stop playing.

"Well, you'll know it.

He won't want to stop, but they will make him stop, which is very different," the former Ballon d'Or winner stated.

In 2019, Buffon himself had stated that his dream is to be able to play at the age of 80.

"I'm still dreaming at 41," he told La Stampa.

"When you dream, it's nice to see yourself in so many different situations. I need enthusiasm.

Last year I thought about retiring but it created too much negativity.

"That's why I dream about staying on the field until I'm 80, when I'm an old man in goal with a walking stick and the No.1 on my back."

He started his career with Italian side Parma in 1995 and was there until 2001 before moving to Juventus and then spent seventeen years at the club until 2018 before he joined Ligue 1 side PSG.

He returned to join the Old Lady in 2019 after spending just one season with the French champions.
