Jubilation as Champions League introduces new rule that will excite Chelsea, other top clubs

Liverpool are reportedly planning to sign Red Bull Salzburg Takumi Minamino when the January transfer window opens next month.

And the Japanese prolific scorer will be able to feature for the Reds in the Champions League if the deal pulls through at the end of the window.

This is because UEFA - the European football governing body has changed the rules guiding the continental championship at the knockout stages.

Before now, players who are cup-tied were not allowed to feature for their new club if they switch sides during the winter transfer window.

Brazil international Philippe Coutinho could not play for Barcelona when he joined them in January of 2018.

However, SunSport reports that clubs must stick with the 25-man limit and meet the quota of eight "locally-trained players".

Manchester United have also shown interest in the player but Liverpool have an edge to seal a £7.25 million for the Japanese.

Minamino has scored nine goals and 11 assists for his Austrian Premier League side including one of each at Anfield in October.
