Prince Al Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal, popularly known as Saudi Arabia's "Sleeping Prince", has died after spending nearly two decades in a coma.
The prince, who was the nephew of billionaire investor Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, slipped into a coma following a severe car accident in 2005. He remained on life support ever since, with his condition closely followed across the Arab world.
A statement posted by the family on Saturday on X expressed "profound sadness and sorrow" over his death and announced that his funeral would be held in Riyadh on Sunday.
Over the years, Prince Al Waleed became a poignant symbol of hope, perseverance, and prayer. Many across the region held onto the possibility of a miraculous recovery, especially after a video surfaced five years ago showing the prince slightly moving his fingers.
Images of the prince, often draped with the Saudi national flag and surrounded by medical equipment, were periodically shared by family members to update the public. One notable image carried the inscription, "Our Country is in Our Hearts," symbolising national pride and unity.
Prince Al Waleed bin Khaled's long battle and eventual passing have drawn heartfelt tributes from citizens and dignitaries alike, marking the end of a 20-year vigil that touched millions.
