On Monday, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, voiced his strong support for President Bola Tinubu's efforts to achieve local government autonomy, as reported by Newsmen. Wike's endorsement was given during the inauguration of the newly renovated War College/Army Checkpoint Road, along with other surrounding roads, in Ushafa, located in Abuja's Bwari Area Council.
During the event, Wike urged residents in local government areas to hold their leaders accountable, underscoring his commitment to local government independence. He expressed confidence in the initiative, saying, "I stand to challenge anybody; since we came as ministers, I don't even know how much they get. I have never bothered to ask, and I am not interested to know."
Wike further highlighted his positive working relationship with Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, as well as with the chairpersons of the six area councils in the FCT.
He emphasized the financial separation between his office and the local councils, stating, "I have my own allocation; they have their own allocation, and that is why I supported Mr. President, and I have no apology to anybody."
Wike's statements note his support for President Tinubu's push for local government autonomy and his belief in the importance of local accountability and financial independence.
