Things The Bible Says About Betting and Gambling

1. Stewardship.

The Bible emphasizes responsible stewardship of resources. In 1 Corinthians 6:12, Paul writes, "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything." This suggests that while gambling may not be explicitly forbidden, Christians should not be mastered or controlled by the desire for wealth through games of chance.

2. Love of Money.

1 Timothy 6:10 famously states, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs." This warns against the pursuit of wealth through gambling, as it can lead to a misplaced love of money, causing harm to oneself and others.

3. Serving Two Masters.

In Matthew 6:24, Jesus teaches, "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money." Engaging in gambling can potentially lead to serving money rather than God, conflicting with Christian principles.

4. Contentment.

Hebrews 13:5 instructs believers, "Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.'" This encourages contentment with what one has rather than seeking more through risky endeavors like gambling.
