Akwa Ibom to put government's jet to commercial use

Akwa Ibom State government has resolved to put its private jet to commercial use to reduce the cost of governance following  the volatile exchange rate in the country.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Ini Ememobong, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the commissioners, the decision was taken during the State Executive Council, SEC, meeting on Monday.

His words: "Council granted permission for the office of the Secretary to the State Government to undertake a cost reduction management structure for Akwa Ibom official private jet.

"This decision is predicated on the need for a drastic reduction in the cost of governance, the volatile exchange rate, and the corresponding increase in the cost of maintenance of the private jet.

"While the aircraft will remain the state's asset, it will be put to more lucrative use."

Also, Ememobong disclosed that the Council received a report that the Akwa Ibom State Social Register now has a total of 671,410 entries.

Furthermore, he disclosed that the Council received a report that the state government and chairmen of local government councils were collaborating to engage vulnerable persons.

According to Ememobong, the Council equally received a report on the proposed dialysis and renal centres.

He said they highlighted the sites, buildings and equipment needed for the Centres.

His words: "The governor demanded for the final report to enable him approve the project for expedited execution.

"Similarly, a report was presented on the Akwa Ibom-United Kingdom Education Exchange Programme explaining that students of secondary schools in rural areas from all councils in the state took examinations from which successful candidates emerged.

"The governor reiterated his preparedness to give the selected students an experience of a lifetime.

"On infrastructure, council ratified recommendations from the Finance and General Purposes Committee(FGPC) on the approval for release of funds for additional works at the airport and ongoing road contracts in the state, " he noted.
